Summer School: FSA Eligibility

Summer school is not eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), limited care flexible spending account (LCFSA) or a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

What is summer school?

Summer school is schooling for children and dependents outside of the standard academic calendar year. Summer schooling is not reimbursable with a consumer-directed healthcare account. If a residential or special school is necessary during the summer, then it could be used as a similar activity to summer school.

What are residential schools?

A residential school and education service for an individual may address a specific medical condition or disease that prevents an individual from obtaining an education at other available facilities.

A residential school or education service for an individual with a medical condition or disease may be eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account if a medical doctor has provided a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) indicating that primary reason for attending the school or educational facility is to receive medical treatment in conjunction with an education. If the primary reason for attending a specific school or educational facility is just for education, then the expense is not necessary and is therefore not eligible for reimbursement.

A residential school may host an individual for medical treatment in a boarding capacity, or provide daytime schooling for them in conjunction with specialized treatment for their condition during the school day. A residential school for education of an individual with a medical condition or disease may have special facilities for them such as a quarantine space, special education professionals, children's educators, or other needs-based personnel or equipment to accommodate for the medical needs that necessitate an education at a special residential school.

After consulting with a medical doctor, determine if a residential school for education is the best choice for an individual requiring education. Even if the individual requiring education is a dependent, education cannot be the sole and primary reason for the expense in order to be eligible for reimbursement, even with a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DCFSA).
