Toothache pain relievers: FSA Eligibility

Toothache pain relievers are eligible over-the-counter (OTC) products with a prescription from a doctor with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) and a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). Toothache pain relievers reimbursement is not eligible with a limited care flexible spending account (LCFSA) or a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

What are toothache pain relievers?

Toothache pain relievers are over-the-counter (OTC) medications that are designed for short-term relief of tooth and gum pain that are applied via pain-relieving gels or liquids. The primary ingredient in these products is benzocaine, a type of topical anesthetic that is used to numb the affected area, but will not contribute to treating the underlying issue causing the toothache.

In the vast majority of cases, dental professionals suggest that whenever a toothache arises, they should make an appointment with their dentist ASAP. Because toothaches can be caused by serious issues like tooth decay, infections or gum disease, it's vital that the pain sufferer goes into the doctor's office for treatment before the condition worsens. Toothache pain relievers, in tandem with other home treatments like saltwater mouth rinses, cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin or acetaminophen can help dull the pain of a toothache, but medical attention and treatment is necessary to ensure that toothaches do not become a recurring issue.
