UV Protective Clothing: FSA Eligibility

UV protective clothing is not eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), limited care flexible spending account (LCFSA) or a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

What is UV protective clothing?

UV or sun protective (SPF) clothing is clothing that has been manufactured to a certain sun protection factor (SPF) rating, similar to sun block. UV protective clothing protects against ultraviolet (UV) light which is the primary cause of skin damage and skin cancer. The clothing may develop its SPF rating based on the type of fabric used, the weave of the fabric, the dyes, and may also have additional chemicals or additives that contribute to the SPF rating. Sun protective clothing may be used in addition to or instead of sunblock or sun protection lotion. Clothing has historically been used as sun protection by humans for thousands of years, but recent technological advances have allowed for sun protective clothing to be manufactured with specific, measurable protection levels against the sunlight.

UV protective clothing may be used in place of sunblock or sun protection lotion by individuals who are unable to use lotions or chemicals on their skin. It may also be useful to wear sun protective clothing in environments that are not conducive to wearing lotions on the skin. An example may be an extremely hot environment where sweating prevents sunblock from remaining in place.

Sun protective clothing is not eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account, but if a person has a medical condition or disease that prevents them from using normal sun protection lotion and it is medically necessary for the individual to spend time outdoors and exposed to the sunlight, then it is possible for a medical doctor to provide a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) which may allow for the sun protective clothing to be considered eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account.
