What is Yoga?

Yoga encompasses a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines. A lot of people practicing yoga are typically part of the program of physical postures designed to provide physical strength, flexibility, stamina and purify the body.

Unlike stretching or fitness, yoga is more than just physical postures. Yoga is unique because it is about connecting the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of our breath. Yoga is a practice, rather than a task or a goal to be completed.

What are the different types of Yoga?

There are quite a few different types of Yoga that have developed over time, some more physically demanding than others. Vinyasa Yoga is the most popular style in America and is all about flowing from one pose to the next.

Commonly called "Vinyasa flow" or just "flow", you'll definitely be moving, flowing from one pose to the next, ot staying long in any pose. If you like strict routines and guidelines, try Ashtanga yoga, which consists of a series of specifically sequenced yoga poses. Iyngar yoga has a huge focus on precision and detail as it relates to your anatomy, movement, and form during yoga.

What are the positive effects that Yoga has on health?

The results of studies have been mixed and inconclusive, but some suggest that yoga may reduce risk factors for cancer and aid in a patient's psychological healing process.

While there might not be a direct correlation between yoga and prevention of specific diseases, it helps improve general health. Positive effects include improved muscle strength, respiration, energy, metabolism, cardio and circulatory health, and bone health as well as protects from injury and boosts immunity.
