3 tips for outdoor fun…the FSA way

The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and the weather’s warming up—we all know what that means: spring is here!

If you’re like us, you’re ready to head outside for some adventure. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or just relaxing in the sun, it’s important to stay safe and prepared. Here are three simple tips for a season full of fun—plus the essentials to take with you. Hint: they’re all FSA eligible.

1. Protect your skin

Keeping skin protected is a year-round thing, but as the days get sunnier, you’re more exposed to harmful UV rays. We’ve got some easy ways to beat the burn:

  • Use sunscreen: Don’t skip, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and make sure to reapply every two hours. Pay extra attention to those “oops I forgot” areas, like the back of your neck, ears, and feet. So many top, trusted, and trending brands are eligible with your FSA—for all ages—including Supergoop!, Banana Boat, Sun Bum, Neutrogena, and more. Shop all your favorites, or try one of our curated suncare bundles, then get ready to catch some rays the safe and healthy way.
  • Layer up: Light layers, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses can help shield you from the sun. For some springtime activities, consider lightweight long sleeves and pants to keep yourself covered.
  • Grab some shade: Although temps are not quite scorching yet (depending where you live), the sun can still be strong midday. If possible, take a break under a tree or find another covered place to hang out

2. Prep for itches & ouches

Cut, scrapes, and bites happen, but you can be ready to take on minor injuries and more by having a plan in place:

  • Pack a first-aid kit: Make sure to include all the FSA eligible essentials, from pre-packed kits to band-aids, gauze, and more. You should also include any personal medications, like an EpiPen, if needed.
  • Know basic first aid: Whether it’s a scraped knee or an insect sting, knowing how to treat common outdoor injuries can help you avoid complications. Take a quick class or brush up on your skills before heading out.
  • Wear proper gear: Be sure to sport the right protective clothes for your activity, like helmets for biking or knee pads for rollerblading. Spring often brings lots of rain, so choose shoes with good traction to avoid slipping.

3. Keep it cool & hydrated

This is a must every day, but especially when you’re out in warmer weather and doing more strenuous activities. Staying cool and hydrated will also help keep you energized:

  • Drink regularly: As the weather warms up, your body can lose more fluids through sweat, even if you don't notice it. Be sure to drink water throughout the day, and try to carry a water bottle with you. Electrolytes are also crucial, like drink pouches you can add right to your water for an extra hint of flavor.
  • Watch for signs: Thirst, dry mouth, and fatigue can be warning signs. If you experience any of these, take a break and rehydrate.
  • Dress smart: Layers make adjusting to changing temps and conditions easy. Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics to keep cool while still protecting yourself from the elements.

It’s the best time of year to enjoy the great outdoors, which is why it’s so important to stay mindful of your health and safety. By protecting your skin, preparing for injuries, and staying hydrated, you can make the most of the beautiful weather ahead—and save with your FSA.
