What Are SomeFSA-Eligible Fertility and Infertility Treatments?

Fertility treatment also refers to a range of functions in the reproductive process which may need medical assistance to replace, bypass or support in order to achieve pregnancy.

According to IRS Publication 502, most types of legal fertility tests and treatments are eligible, But it's still a complex subject. The IRS specifically states that the following are eligible:

• Procedures to overcome an inability to have children.
• Procedures like temporary storage of eggs or sperm.
• Surgery, including an operation to reverse a prior surgical procedure to prevent reproduction.

And a small, but important list of things that aren't covered...

• Supplements
• Non-prescription medicines
• Medicines purchased or shipped from other countries
• lllegal operations or treatments

These treatments may be as simple as medication that enhances fertility in either partner, like ones that have hormones that push the female body to be more receptive to achieving pregnancy via increased egg release.

These treatments can also include artificial insemination, where intercourse is replaced by a low-tech medical process of insemination. Likewise, IVF technologies and procedures are eligible, and they typically work in tandem with other technologies and medications to reduce discomfort for patients, to minimize the number of attempts required to achieve a healthy pregnancy, and to minimize expenses.

All of this said, FSAs come in all shapes and sizes and not all FSAs will cover all IRS-allowed expenses. In all cases and as part of your planning, it's important to speak with your HR department about what exactly your employer's FSA will cover before you plan to use it to cover these expenses.
