What is dandruff?

Dandruff is when skin cells grow and die to fast on the scalp. Dandruff is oftentimes attributed to a person’s autoimmune reaction to malassezia fungus on the scalp. A person can also get dandruff because they have seborrheic dermatitis (WebMD). 

What is dandruff shampoo?

Dandruff shampoo is a type of shampoo that contains dandruff fighting ingredients such as zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide.. Dandruff shampoos also contain other ingredients that help to moisturize the scalp and wash out already existing flakes (Procter & Gamble). 

A common form of dandruff shampoo is T/Gel which contains coal tar as the main active ingredient. Coal tar has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve itch. Coal tar is absorbed into the scalp skin and helps slow cell multiplication that helps reduce thickening of the scalp (NetDoctor). 

Dandruff shampoo may be eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-direct healthcare account with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a medical professional, but typically only for the portion of the cost that exceeds that of a normal shampoo.
