What is a stool softener?

Stool softeners are over-the-counter medications that fall into the laxative family of medicines that are used to alleviate constipation and other digestive issues. Stool softeners are a type of “emollient laxative,” which are considered one of the most mild forms of laxatives available that assists in wetting and softening stool to ward off constipation and ease pain and discomfort during bowel movements. The most common active ingredients in stool softeners are docusate sodium and docusate calcium (Healthline).

Stool softeners are usually taken before bedtime and are available in capsules, tablets, liquids and syrups.
