It’s one of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions: getting in shape. Each year, people flock to the gym to sign up for memberships in the hopes of staying in shape, getting healthy and increasing their exercise routine. And, who can blame them?
Flexible Spending Accounts + Gym
Though it’s a healthy step in the right direction, gym membership fees are only sometimes considered eligible with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). In order to qualify for FSA reimbursement, you would need a doctor’s note indicating that the gym membership would help with the treatment of a specific medical condition. The IRS looks at health club/gym membership fees as “general health” items, rather than as a necessity to treat specific medical conditions. Unfortunately, that often results in gym memberships not being considered as FSA eligible, but it really depends on the FSA account.
