Are diapers FSA eligible?

The Question of the Week:

"Can I buy diapers with my flexible spending account? I'm wondering that since I can buy other baby stuff, but I'm confused." - Sheri (Boston, Mass.)

Hi Sheri,

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) can cover a huge range of qualifying medical products and services. While some products may seem like a no-brainer for reimbursement, there are a few items that have a tangible purpose in everyday life that are still questionable to many FSA account holders. Diapers among those items that people often wonder about.

Baby Diapers

Diapers are a major necessity for new parents. Your FSA will cover a wide range of baby care products like baby sunscreen, thermometers, breastfeeding supplies and others, but diapers for newborns are not eligible for FSA reimbursement.

Diapers and diaper service expenses are usually ineligible unless they are used to alleviate the effects of a particular disease or medical condition. When diapers are necessary in relation to a medical condition, a Letter of Medical Necessity from a doctor will need to be submitted to your FSA administrator in order for you to be reimbursed from your FSA. If your child suffers from incontinence past the toddler years, potty training aids like training pants and night pads are FSA eligible. This can aid parents whose children are having significant difficulty with potty training.

Adult Diapers

Of course, incontinence is not just an issue that pertains to young children, and can also be a problem that plagues adults. Adult diapers, and underwear pads are FSA eligible and are extremely important to those who suffer from incontinence.
