Eyeglass Accessories: FSA Eligibility

Eyeglass accessories are eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA), a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA), or a limited care flexible spending account (LCFSA). Eyeglass accessories are not eligible for reimbursement with a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA).

What are eyeglass accessories?

Eyeglass accessories are items that accessorize the use of prescription eyeglasses or prescription sunglasses. Commonly used eyeglass accessories include repair kits, lens cloths, lens cleaning solutions, eyeglass cords, screwdriver kits, replacement nose pads, temple pads, and eyeglass protection solutions.

Eyeglass accessories must be used for the adaptation, maintenance, or repair of prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses to be considered eligible for reimbursement with a consumer-directed healthcare account. Eyeglass accessories are not considered eligible for reimbursement if they are cosmetic or if they are not used for non-prescription eyeglasses or sunglasses.

Eyeglass repair kits are an eyeglass accessory that typically consists of screwdriver sets and replacement screws. They may also include small pliers which are designed to manipulate the placement of nose pad arms. Other eyeglass accessories useful for repairing eyeglasses are replacement nose pads and temple pads. These eyeglass accessories allow eyeglasses to rest comfortably on the nose or temple, respectively.

Eyeglass accessories that help maintain eyeglasses include lens cloths, lens cleaning solutions, and eyeglass protection solutions. Eyeglasses are vulnerable to being scratched by hard objects such as sand and metal fragments. Eyeglass lens cloths and solutions are designed to gently remove debris from the surface of the eyeglass lens to prevent scratches from occurring. Certain solutions can also mitigate the effects of an existing scratch, allowing the eyeglasses to remain useful.

Eyeglass accessories that help with adaptability include nose pads, temple pads, and eyeglass cords. These eyeglass accessories help eyeglasses sit at the appropriate position to allow for proper vision, and for retention of the eyeglasses to prevent them from falling or becoming lost.
