Baby sunscreen safety

Babies under 6 months old should be kept out of the sun entirely as their skin is ultra-sensitive.

According to babycenter.com, one sunburn can double the risk of melanoma later on in life.

- The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Stay in the shade, or if you do take baby outside, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen to the face and body.

- It's important to apply sunscreen even on a cloudy day as sun light reflects off of water, snow, and other elements.

Protect babies from harmful UV rays with a SPF of at least 15, and apply this 15-30 minutes before leaving home. Slather on a new layer of sunscreen every 2 hours over all exposed parts of the face, neck, and body. If you dip baby into water, make sure to reapply sunscreen immediately after drying off.

Sunscreen has an expiration date. Check it regularly and if it has expired, get new bottles to adequately protect baby. FSAstore.com carries a variety of FSA eligible baby sunscreens in addition to regular adult sunscreen, and several bundles for the family.
