Can I use my Flexible Spending Account for insurance premiums?
No. The IRS does not allow you to use a Flexible Spending Account to pay insurance premiums. However, you can use your FSA towards other out-of-pocket expenses related to health care services such as co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance.
Some FSA eligible services are not typically covered by your regular insurance plan. You can visit a chiropractor, acupuncturist and even a Christian Science practitioner with an FSA – which your insurance might deny.
Examples of out-of-pocket expenses your FSA covers:
-Doctors, dentists, psychiatrists, ophthalmologists, surgeons
-Hospital services, lab fees
-Drug/alcohol addiction treatment and smoking-cessation programs
-Eye exams, laser eye surgery, eyeglasses, contact lens care
-Hearing aids, dentures, crutches, guide dogs or service animals
Beyond services, you can use your FSA for medical products, medical supplies, and prescription drugs. FSAstore.com sells FSA eligible products - those that not require a prescription, as well as over-the-counter medicines.
