Flexible Spending Account-eligible treatment: Carpal tunnel
Have you ever felt a sharp pain that seems to shoot up through your arm when you’re working at your computer or writing? Has that repeatedly happened?
You’re not alone. What you could be experiencing is carpal tunnel syndrome. Symptoms of carpal tunnel are often weakness, burning, tingling, or itchy numbing sensations around your hand, fingers or arm. While you may think that the symptoms will naturally go away, they could worsen if
you don’t treat them.
Flexible Spending Account Eligible Expenses
Your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) can treat carpal tunnel syndrome, so you can go on with the rest of your day without any discomfort.
If you think you might have carpal tunnel, it’s best to schedule a visit for a physical exam. The doctor will perform a few types of tests (on your hands, arms, fingers, etc.) to determine
if you have carpal tunnel syndrome, or not.
How can I treat carpal tunnel with an FSA?
- After consulting a doctor, you might be advised to rest the affected area and avoid any activities that could worsen symptoms. Treatment varies, and of course your doctor would know best how to help your specific situation.
- Some doctors may also recommend strengthening exercises under supervision from a physical therapist. A visit to the therapist would also be considered FSA eligible.
- Alternative medical care provided by a chiropractor or acupuncturist may also be considered. You can use an FSA for treatment from either of these medical providers. These providers may not be covered by your regular health insurance, while you can use an FSA to cover co-pays,
deductibles and coinsurance.
- Carpal tunnel support including wrist bandages are FSA eligible items that you can buy for treatment. You might also be able to use hot/cold therapy packs to provide relief from any discomfort.
