Are Fitbit and Apple Watch FSA eligible?

Admit it, you've looked at wearable devices and thought, "THIS is just what I need to get healthy and stay on track this coming year." No judgment: We're guilty of the same thing. And we wouldn't blame you for wondering if you could nab one of these with tax-free dollars.

Wearable devices are getting more popular by the day — not only for those looking to get healthy, but also for employers looking to motivate workers into staying that way. (Because healthy employees mean fewer sick days and lower costs.)

For the moment, wearable devices that are primarily fitness trackers are still not considered FSA eligible. If devices like the Apple Watch and Fitbit were specifically designed to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent a disease, this would perhaps be different. But devices that are meant to track or simply contribute to general health and overall well-being don’t quite meet the threshold to make them qualify for purchase with pre-tax dollars. In some circumstances, they may be eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity from a medical professional.
