What is cold cream?

Cold cream has been used for centuries as a cosmetic to refresh the look of skin by moisturizing the underlying layers, as well as removing any dirt and oil present. Cold cream was originally conceived as an emulsion of water and certain fats, such as beeswax that can assist in smoothing skin and treating imperfections. Today, the product is typically made with a few simple ingredients, including water, mineral oil, waxes like beeswax or ceresin and some fragrances. The term "cold cream" is derived from the sensation that the cream leaves on the skin as the water in the product evaporates.

Today, the primary use for cold creams is to remove makeup, as its oils have a special ability to dissolve cosmetic products on the skin without causing irritation or robbing the skin of moisture, especially since excessive rubbing of the skin is not necessary to remove makeup. Cold creams can even be used to remove more stubborn cosmetics, such as eyeshadow and eyeliner by gently rubbing it along the lash line with eyes closed and patting it dry with a towel (HuffPost Lifestyle).
