What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a type of noninvasive, drug-free medical technique that aims to optimize total body health through treatment and strengthening of the body's musculoskeletal system, which includes the joints, spine and muscles. Through the use of manual manipulation techniques and other treatment methods, osteopaths take holistic approach to healing the entire body rather than focusing on a specific symptom, which primarily affects the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Osteopaths treat a wide variety of medical conditions and injuries, and they regularly treat individuals who have been injured at home, the workplace or participating in athletic activities. These conditions can range from everyday aches and pains in the head, back, neck and feet, as well as common issues like sciatica, shin splints, tennis elbow and repetitive strain injuries. In some cases, osteopaths may offer holistic treatments to treat symptoms of asthma, arthritis, digestive issues, carpal tunnel syndrome and posture problems.

The underlying thinking behind many osteopathy techniques is the practice's underlying philosophy whose principles state that the body's various structures work together in an integrated manner, and when any of these functions are blocked or restricted, this can lead to inflammation, pain and wide variety of other health conditions. Hands-on techniques such as soft tissue stretching, deep tactile pressure and manipulation of joints has been found to be effective in treating a huge range of potential health issues (Medical News Today).
