What is St. John's Wort?

St. John's Wort, or St John's wort, is a medicinal herb with antidepressant activities and anti-inflammatory properties. Its name stems from the tradition of its harvesting and flowering on June 24th, or St. John's Day. St John's Wort is an herbaceous perennial plant that grows around the world but originally came from Europe and Asia.

Numerous studies have proven St Johns wort's effectiveness in treating depression. One proposed mechanism, not yet entirely understood, is that it prohibits reuptake of certain neurotransmitters. It can also cause photosensitivity, and may aggravate psychosis in individuals with schizophrenia. It has interactions with SSRI antidepressants, birth control pills, and warfarin (WebMD).

Depression can be caused by numerous different life events, chemical imbalances, and other medical conditions. A medical professional should be consulted before taking St Johns wort or before taking any additional medications. A medical professional should know when an individual is taking St Johns wort so that they can safely prescribe additional medications.

St Johns wort contains numerous chemicals that may contribute to its mechanism for treating depression (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health). St Johns wort is normally consumed in pill form. St Johns wort is also known as Tipton's weed, rosin rose, goatweed, chase-devil, and Klamath weed.
