Standing Desk: FSA Eligibility

Standing Desk: reimbursement is not eligible with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
A standing desk is not eligible with a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). A standing desk is not eligible for reimbursement with a dependent care flexible spending account (DCFSA) or a limited-purpose flexible spending account (LPFSA).

What is a standing desk?

Standing, or adjustable, desks that can be moved to various positions to make it more comfortable for the user in sitting or standing positions, have been in existence in some form for hundreds of years. However, they gained great popularity in the early portion of the 21st century as a means of limiting workplace immobility and improved range of motion for working professionals who traditionally would be confined to a chair for their entire day. (New York Times)

Standing desks are a result of long-term studies about the health effects that inactivity can have for a person’s overall well-being, and they have been actively embraced to limit sedentary behavior at the office. As opposed to traditional workstations that feature an adjustable chair and a fixed desk, standing desks are available in fixed positions that allow only for standing, while other designs can be found in adjustable sitting and standing configurations (UCLA Health).

Are standing desks eligible for reimbursement?

Standing desks are not eligible for reimbursement with common consumer-directed healthcare accounts like FSAs or HSAs. If you have a specific medical condition which requires the use of a standing desk, speak with your benefits administrator to determine if all or a portion of the cost may be eligible with appropriate documentation.
