What is wisdom tooth extraction?

Wisdom tooth extraction is a form of oral surgery that is conducted by a dentist or oral surgeon to remove one (or more) of four permanent adult molars that are found in the back corners of the top and bottom of the mouth. Wisdom teeth are removed for a variety of reasons, such as impacted teeth that can cause pain and discomfort or preparing the mouth for orthodontia. These teeth typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25, but some individuals may not develop wisdom teeth at all (Mayo Clinic).

How is wisdom tooth extraction performed?

Depending on how impacted wisdom teeth are at the time of the surgery, the oral surgeon may use local or general anesthesia to remove these teeth during the operation. Wisdom tooth extraction is usually an outpatient procedure that can take about an hour, and depending on the effects of anesthesia on the patient, some can return to normal activities soon after the procedure.

Patients who undergo wisdom teeth extraction will usually feel little to no pain after surgery, but swelling and bleeding are important factors to monitor during the recovery period. Patients will need to eat softer foods in the days following the procedure, as well as regular rinsing with warm water salt solution to clean out the affected area of any dried blood and particulates that could lead to infection.

As the gums heal in the days after the surgery, the patient can transition back to solid foods. If bleeding, swelling or a fever arises in the days after the surgery, this could be a sign of an infection and patients should consult their doctors immediately (WebMD).
