Oral care products: What is FSA-eligible

Your oral hygiene is important to you and there is an incredibly diverse set of products out there to take care of your mouth and teeth. It can be difficult to navigate what is deemed a FSA-eligible medical expense by IRS guidelines though.

Some products straddle that grey area between medical use and general good health use. While some oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash are ineligible because they are considered for general good health, we want to provide a breakdown of oral care products that are eligible with your Flexible Spending Account. All of these products are available for purchase right here at FSAstore.com.

Sunscreen Lip Balm

Important in the summer because of sun exposure, lip balm primarily used for sun protection with broad spectrum protection and SPF 15+ is FSA eligible.

Denture Care

Dentures act as removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Since you're likely to ingest what is on them, it's important to keep them clean and free of bacteria. You might want to consider using denture adhesives if you have dry mouth conditions or to enhance retention, stability, and bite force. There are many tools dedicated to denture care from brushes to cleanser tablets.

Dental Guard

If you have bruxism, or a condition where you grind, gnash, or clench your teeth, a dental guard is crucial for protecting your teeth at night. Unconscious grinding of the teeth can lead to jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth, and other issues.

Baby Teething Medicine

Teething starts anytime between 3 and 12 months of age. Some of the symptoms of teething include biting on fingers or toys to relieve pressure in their gums. Babies may also refuse to eat or drink due to pain in their mouth. FSA Store provides teething pain medicine with a topical anesthetic effect to temporarily soothe the pain.

Orthodontics

Your FSA account can help to pay for any teeth alignment problems that may require dental braces, wires, retainers, or other methods of treatment. Malpositioned teeth and jaws can present more serious later on so it is important to correct them earlier. Braces are not the most comfortable contraptions, so FSA Store carries an Ortho Wax that provides relief from irritation.
